The strongest evergreen espaliers I would like to highlight below are yew, holly, and holm oak. They stand out for their excellent winter hardiness, disease resistance, and stability.

Yew is very robust in terms of winter hardiness; it can be planted in very cold regions. However, it is best to avoid overly wet soils, which it generally does not tolerate well. Holly is also a solid evergreen espalier. Like yew, it is well suited to larger gardens.
Holm oak, in addition to its hardiness, is highly resistant to drought, heat stress, and salty winds. This espalier suits both large and small gardens. It also tolerates slightly wetter soils.

People are not only looking for robust evergreen espaliers, but also aesthetically pleasing ones. During visits to our nursery, I am often asked: which evergreen espaliers are the most beautiful? My answer is not always what they expect…

Because what is beauty, really. It may be nothing more than a passing spark. We let ourselves be charmed by a fleeting detail — red leaves, tiny white flowers… a momentary kind of beauty.

But I understand that you still want some guidance in this article. That is why I present two particularly beautiful evergreen espaliers:

Holm oak creates a remarkable reflection of light, giving each season a different effect. It is a deep, refined, elusive beauty of the moment.
Ilex castaneifolia is a holly variety with a lovely moss‑green appearance. Its matte tone is not a vivid green and draws less attention. Yet this holly has a warm, atmospheric presence and is anything but dull.

People often look for fast‑growing evergreen espaliers. Fast‑growing, because they want to create privacy from neighbours as quickly as possible. But…

Fast‑growing trees are effective during the first two years. After that, you actually want a slow‑growing tree, because it requires far less maintenance (provided it has been cultivated correctly).

Ask yourself: do you truly want a fast‑growing espalier, or do you want an instant effect? Laurel, for example, grows very quickly and is therefore often chosen. But keep in mind: it only reaches about 4 metres, whereas holm oak grows much taller.

A short‑term solution is always tempting, but it comes with a significant maintenance cost later on. And often, people are not satisfied afterwards. It is not uncommon for Espaliers to be asked to replace fast‑growers with other evergreen espaliers.
