A festival of colours is how autumn is best described. When we plant trees, they are usually planted so you can see them from your house. When autumn rolls around, the spectacle of constantly changing colours can influence your quality of life and your decor. We can try to describe what each particular tree will look like during this season, but each and every autumn, nature does its own thing, presenting us with colourful surprises.

The beauty of autumn

It's the end of September. Growth is slowing. Let's take a look at how some of our young trees get ready for winter.
The sap stream gradually enters a resting phase, the tree begins to withdraw its energy from the leaves so energy can be stored it in the twigs. At the nursery you'll notice this in the thickening of the tree trunk.
Soon these pleached liquidambars will provide a spectacle of color.

Quercus ilex:
Our unique selection, which distinguishes itself by its beautiful leaf and frost resistant properties, is getting ready for winter. Growth is slowing, the cells become firmer.
We remain the most northern nursery to cultivate pleached holm oaks.

In the beautiful city of Ghent, flowers and plants are exhibited at 4 locations. The host country this year is Japan. The Floralies only take place once every five years.
Some of our creations are on display during the exposition.
At the entrance of the old floralies hall, you can walk through a labyrinth of low espaliers screens provided by our nursery.
We recommend visiting in the evening. All creations are then beautifully lit by specialists.
You can visit the exposition every day up to Sunday, May 1st, 2016 from 8.00 to 22.00
If you travel to Ghent by train, have a drink at the Brazza Cafe near the St Pieters railway station. The natural shade on the terrace is provided by our parasols!

Privacy equals freedom and we consider privacy to be an important aspect of every garden. We accept the challenge to create this freedom using live and green means.
The art lies in composing this green intervention so that it feels like a natural environment far away from disturbing elements, even if they are sometimes in close proximity.
When growing and applying our trees, we strive for the perfect blend of function, structure and wild nature.
Beautifully durable end results are achieved by growing specially selected trees for these specific purposes. In a world where everything is cultivated faster and faster, we are doing the exact opposite with our unique approach. Discover the differences and advantages at our nursery.

Privacy, life & style

These fruit trees of the "Conférence" variety are between 50 and 60 years of age. Conférence espaliered fruit has many benefits. The tree is not very susceptible to damage. The abundance of white flowers in spring provide a beautiful contrast with the old and distinctive branches.
This espaliered fruit tree is self-pollinating.
The tree bears pears abundantly. The pears store very well. Harvesting should be done around mid-September.
Pyrus communis 'Conférence' as espalier is grown mainly in Belgium and France.
This tree is in stock, in pot. It is plantable year-round

Enjoy the spring sun under thousands of flowering blooms.

This parasol tree is one of the earliest spring bloomers, this guarantees a visit from early bumblebees.

You mustn't expect real shade, the sun shines right through the blossoms. Experiencing a spring feeling in al its glory is what gives this parasol its added value.

Block,  cube and beam shapes provide structure and nature in gardens where a large trees are unable to freely develop. Being space-saving and low maintenance, they accentuate the architecture of buildings. These compact trees have a limited root growth so they can be planted close to hardened surfaces.
These trees are guided in a natural way. You will never find metal pipes or fittings in the crowns of our trees.
In addition to our standard sizes we offer these remarkable trees in high quality tailor-made solutions.
Standard sizes, available in multiple types and stem heights:

Low pleached screens provide just enough privacy to quietly read a book out of sight of neighbours. On the terrace, in the sun and out of the wind.

Movable screens
Low screens in pots can be moved easily.
They can be installed temporarily and strategically in anticipation of a hedge that has not yet fully grown.
Available in multiple screen heights. The most common sizes are 150cm and 180cm tall.

Screens planted in the ground
These are best compared with hedges but with the advantages of a guided structure. The main advantages are that they don't require a lot of and require less maintenance.

Low screens and flowers.
With the moveable climbing hydrangea screens Elaeagnus or Tuscan jasmine, you surround yourself with flowers and pleasant scents in the summer.

These evergreen pleached trees are just under 7m high and once planted take about 20cm of space. These screens provide privacy yet still let light through.
Both owners and neighbours no longer have a view of brick walls and gaping windows.

A natural screen of fine leaves no longer allows curious looks into your property.
The plantings near Wageningen (Netherlands) was accompanied by our service team.

Large trees in small gardens

We have been able to supply deciduous hornbeams for several years now. We can offer these trees with unique characteristics thanks to a well-considered and natural selection process. With this method, we wanted to be able to offer trees with specific properties without the disadvantages of cultivars.

We proceed as follows:
When selecting our pleached hornbeams we try to find trees that preserve their leaves the best. Carpinus betulus is sown and every tree on the field has genetically different properties. On average, 10 to 30% of these trees show deciduous characteristics.
We mark these trees and use them to grow our pleached trees.
Thanks to rejuvenation pruning these evergreen features are reinforced.
We do just the opposite with the natural parasol. With these trees, it is desirable that they are as transparent as possible in the winter.
The greater the genetic diversity, the stronger the hedge or screen and the greater the added value for nature.

Our assortment of espaliered fruit is expanding. We were able to add new shapes and sizes recently. For example, we can now offer older specimens of Palmette Verrier.

The cultivation of our trees is done in the air. From now on we are able to do our work silently, thanks to our purchase of an electric cherry picker. With an autonomy of four to five days, we are able to stay on the field for longer, environmentally friendly and quieter than the sound of the birds.

Parasol trees provide natural but also cooler shade.
Just like we our pleached trees, we also have potted parasol trees.
You can plant our potgrown parasol trees in the middle of summer, or keep them in a pot on the patio.
This allows you to position the trees on your patio and to determine where you would like the shade before planting them.
We offer potted parasol trees in different sizes and in multiple species.

Scenic moments in our nursery: Autumn

Open-soil grown pleached trees are prepared with care. The ideal season for planting is now and lasts until March. You may also plant during periods of (night) frost, as long as the roots are protected, and the earth isn't frozen solid. We don't pull up trees at our nursery, we excavate them professionally from the ground.

We've added photograps to our segment of pleached fruit trees. Pleached fruit trees give a lot of return on small surfaces.

The espalier and the art of pleaching originated in France when attempting to shape fruit trees. This art form soon spread to Belgium.

Species of pleached fruit trees

Due to the harsh winter we saw extraordinarily beautiful blooms this year.
At the end of May, racemes of Photinia swell and cover the pleached screen with thousands of pearls.
A little while later these beads develop to a screen of white flowers.

The flowering of this evergreen espalier is not its finest moment.
After flowering, beautiful red shoots ensure a stunning wow effect.

Sometimes both may occur at the same time. A nice surprise every year!

A wide range of espaliers and potted parasol trees allow you to deviate from the normal planting period. With a little extra care (extra watering during dry spells) you can still create privacy and shade during the summer months. The largest selection and unusual shapes are still offered in the autumn, both in clod and bare root.

Most parasol trees require maintenance at least once a year. Some species prefer pruning twice a year.

The frequency of pruning can be compared to the maintenance of a hedge.
If you prune once a year, then you'll have more waste and the pruning itself will take longer.
A parasol tree should always be maintained with secateurs. Maintenance with hedge shears may have a nice effect temporarily, but creates long-term problems in the long run

Each  parasol shape requires its own manner of pruning, generally you take into account the following rules:

Slow growing parasol trees:
annual pruning
time of year is dependent on the species

Fast-growing parasol trees:
Annual pruning of young trees not yet self-sustaining phase
2-yearly pruning: work growth retardant and gives less pruning waste
time is dependent on the species

Low maintenance parasol trees:
You can choose parasol trees that need a 2-yearly prune or at most a slight thinning of the branches.

A pleached tree needs support during its young pleaching phase, that support is temporary. When growing and forming our parasol shapes and espaliers, we use natural, bio-degradable materials in the nursery.
This method is labor intensive and requires expertise. The trees are at their best when they rely on themselves. The result is a durably cultivated shaped tree.

Sustainably cultivated without the use of metal

The height where the first structual branch or level begins is determined at the nursery. The correct stem height is very important for the final effect. Since the height of the trunk is difficult to adjust, we offer a range of heights.
Here is an overview of the possibilities:
Espaliered stem heights
180cm / 200cm / 220cm
Deviating stem heights that we grow
0cm / 120cm / 150cm / 170cm
230cm / 250cm / 270cm
Low espaliered stem heights
0cm / 40cm / 50cm / 100cm
Parasol tree trunk heights
220 240 250 265 270 275 300 350 420cm (default in bold)

Guidelines for choosing the stem height.

Trained trees beside fences, heather matting or wood panels:
The stem height is preferably the height of the fence or slightly higher.
Usually 180cm or 200cm

Trained trees planted alongside or in a hedge:
For the maintenance of the hedge to run smoothly, the screen, level or structual brances preferably starts at least 20cm above the hedge.

Pleached trees next to a wall:
You can either partially or completely cover the wall.
The tree doesn't suffer any damage being planted close to a wall.
Usually, the upper part of the wall is overlapped which means that the espalier starts slightly lower than the wall height.

The stem height of an espalier or parasol tree does not grow along with the tree. An espalier with a stem height of 200cm will remain 200cm. It is therefore important to determine the appropriate minimum trunk height when purchasing your tree.
You can remove lower branches by pruning so that the stem is higher. The other way around is not possible.

Stem heights

Specialised nursery

It's all about the maintenance. Screens should be maintained as a hedge. Levels should be pruned using secateurs. Not every tree is suitable to be guided on screen. It depends on the nature of the tree.
Some trees behave very well if they are maintained as a hedge. For example, the hornbeam (Carpinus betulus). When maintained as a screen, the branch structure and the leaves are packed tightly together so that they are in competition with each other. One can assume that trees grown as hedges can handle this competition and can be guided smoothly on screen.
The Plane tree (Platanus x acerifolia), for example, is a typical tree that can only be maintained in levels (frames). The Plane tree is a tree that needs space to develop its branches and leaves. If you don't give it its space, the plane will react badly. The leaves of the Plane tree need light. If they are too close together, lots of hairs will form. Leaves that don't get enough ligh will turn yellow and fall off.You can see this in poorly maintained Plane trees.

What to choose?
If privacy is important, one can opt for the screen shape. This has the same effect of a hedge, but takes up less space than a hedge.
If privacy is less important, you can opt for levels. This application lets a lot of light through.

A screen is easy to maintain with the secateurs.
Frames or floors can be maintained on one side with the secateurs.
