Cities are increasingly struggling with heat stress. Climate adaptation is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. That is why, at espaliers, we are firmly committed to solutions that combine beauty and functionality. The best sun protection for outdoors, on your patio and indoors? Nature, of course. After all, we believe that greenery is more than just decoration. From bespoke trees to integrated natural sun protection: we incorporate these living allies as a fully-fledged part of your design. With this article, I aim not only to inspire, but also to provide a solid basis for this approach. Because the future is both green and functional.

Trees: living sun protection with cooling power
Trees are, without exaggeration, the most efficient and climate‑friendly form of sun protection for both outdoor and indoor environments.
They provide shade, reduce direct solar radiation on façades and windows, and actively cool through leaf evaporation (evapotranspiration), which extracts heat from the surrounding air.
In urban areas, the temperature difference between tree‑rich and tree‑poor zones can reach up to 25 °C. You can clearly feel that difference in your own outdoor space as well. An extra advantage: in winter, deciduous trees allow plenty of light to pass through thanks to leaf fall, preserving passive heat gain.
In short, trees combine dynamic shade management with air purification, biodiversity and aesthetics. They are sun protection, air‑conditioning and ecosystem service in one.
What about artificial sun protection for outdoors and indoors?
These solutions are well known and can be complementary, but they lack the self‑regulating power of natural systems. They are often expensive to purchase and install, consume energy, barely contribute to cooling the outdoor air, and keep heat out without offering broader ecological value.
Air conditioning
Mobile air conditioners are often used as a quick fix against heat. They provide local and temporary comfort, but unfortunately also cause a significant increase in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. When we rely solely on active cooling such as air conditioning, we shift the problem to the future at the expense of the environment, public health and energy supply.
Curtains, sun‑blocking screens and blinds
Heavy curtains can still have a decent effect. Other indoor solutions are mainly suitable for privacy and far less effective at keeping heat out. And who wants to spend the summer living behind closed curtains.
Reflective window film (applied indoors)
Reflective film is applied to the inside of the window. It reflects sunlight and prevents solar and heat rays from entering or being absorbed. A low‑cost solution.
Roller shutters, exterior screens and window shutters
Roller shutters, exterior screens and window shutters are mounted on the outside of the window and are therefore more efficient than indoor solutions. But they often require invasive work: drilling holes, adding structures or even renovating. This solution is also not very ecological.
Sun‑blocking patio covers and outdoor canopies
A fixed patio cover or pergola above your terrace is also a major intervention. Moreover, heat tends to accumulate underneath the structure. They are anything but dynamic, yet despite the high cost you still see them in many gardens. Wooden versions last 10 to 15 years; treatment against moisture and rot can extend this. Metal and aluminium options can last up to 25 years.
Parasols and shade sails on your terrace
Parasols and shade sails can be placed or hung above your terrace during summer. They protect you from harsh sunlight and, when placed close to your windows, they help somewhat to reduce indoor heat gain. But again, heat remains trapped underneath the fabric. In addition, these solutions are prone to fading and wear.
Smart combination of architecture and nature
Not every outdoor space allows the planting of (large) trees, agreed. But that doesn’t mean natural sun protection is off the table.
Well‑designed and functional greenery can be used strategically as a tailor‑made shading solution. Espaliers cultivates trees that create cooling exactly where it’s needed, with minimal space requirements and maximum effectiveness.
Natural and architectural sun protection do not have to exclude one another. By integrating green elements into façade design, roof overhangs or canopies, a hybrid system emerges that provides both thermal comfort and spatial quality. For those who are not yet ready to go fully “natural”, this synergy offers an ideal intermediate step.
Our team has many years of carefully built expertise in this field.
What does custom natural outdoor sun protection cost?
