Where do you find the most beautiful multi‑stem trees? According to many, at Espaliers. For decades, the strength of our atmospheric tree nursery has been rooted in the design and cultivation of the finest multi‑stem specimens in a wide range of forms and age categories. With our unique multi‑stem creations, you add an extra dimension to your living environment. For us, the “multi” in multi‑stem stands for: more space, more nature, more character, more depth, more life. In this article, you will discover more about multi‑stem trees and how they can elevate your garden project to a more artistic level.

The most beautiful multi-stem trees follow nature

Multi-stem trees naturally have more presence and create a powerful impact, but not every multi-stem is pleasing to the eye. At Espaliers, we are convinced of one thing: the most beautiful multi-stem trees follow nature.

That’s why we specialise in unique, artistic multi-stems grown with respect for their natural growth habit. As they develop, our garden experts — true artists — make only the interventions needed to highlight the best features of each tree. From the very beginning, we consider the different purposes a multi-stem tree may serve later on.

Do you want a tree that makes an impact
Do you want a multi-stem that stands out
Do you want a multi-stem with an extra function, such as screening
Or do you want pure natural beauty you’ll never grow tired of
At our tree nursery, we can present a wide variety of unique multi-stem forms, perfectly suited to your project. Looking for expert guidance? You’re welcome to visit our nursery for an informal inspiration tour.

What types of multi-stem trees exist?

When we look at growth habits, we distinguish two types of multi-stem trees:

1. Grown from multiple stems

These multi-stems are the most common in nature. They arise when several seeds germinate together, often because animals like squirrels store their food supplies. Think of hornbeam or certain oaks. Some trees naturally produce suckers, such as Amelanchier or Gymnocladus, and therefore often start with multiple stems emerging from the ground. Some of these trees can even naturally fuse together.

2. Grown from a single stem

In this group, the tree starts from one stem and splits just above or slightly higher than ground level. This also occurs frequently in nature. It often concerns shrubs that grow into trees, such as Cornus or maple. Sometimes this multi-stem structure develops due to external influences, such as animals or branches breaking due to weather or gnawing.

Is there a difference?

Aesthetically, not really. Both types offer an equally strong appearance. The only difference lies in how the plant naturally grows. Not every species can handle the competition of multiple stems and therefore won’t grow that way. But every plant can start from a single stem.

Multi-stem parasol trees

At our nursery, you will also find a very special group of multi-stems: multi-stem parasol trees. Ideal as natural sun protection in your garden or on your terrace.

Parasol trees, also known as roof trees, have a broad, spreading crown that is often trained or pruned to take on the shape of a parasol. Espaliers specialises in this and distinguishes itself in the following ways:

Our multi-stem sun canopies have a selected yet natural branch structure
The filtering crown has an open structure designed to maximise light and atmosphere
They offer a pleasant shaded area and form a natural and above all sustainable alternative to artificial sun protection.

At Espaliers, you will find — alongside single-stem forms — the most beautiful multi-stem parasol trees, combining a playful trunk structure with a balanced canopy. This allows you to enjoy refreshing coolness on extremely sunny days, in the presence of a stunning tree.

Multi-stem trees for a small garden

Did you know that you can enjoy the most beautiful multi-stems even in a small garden? At Espaliers, we grow our multi-stem trees with refined elegance, allowing them to remain more compact. This way, even with limited space, you can enjoy the playful, natural and artistic character of a multi-stem.

In this case, choose medium-growing trees that remain manageable and allow light to pass through. This helps maintain the right proportions and prevents overly dark areas. Dwarf forms can sometimes look too artificial, while fast-growing species take up too much space and produce excessive pruning waste.

Do you have a small garden and also want to create sufficient privacy? Then you might consider our multi-stem pleached trees, known as an excellent solution.

FAQs about multi-stem trees

Which multi-stems suit my project best?

The best choice depends on several factors: the available space, the desired style, the effect you want to create and the function of the tree (impact, elegance, shade, privacy or atmosphere). Feel free to visit us — we’ll look at your garden or project together.

How much maintenance does a multi-stem tree require?

Once planted, a multi-stem tree requires little maintenance, as long as you keep the trunk structure free of new shoots, thin out the branches occasionally and maintain the tree’s overall balance. In a landscape setting, maintenance is minimal or even unnecessary.

Can I buy multi-stem trees in pots from you?

Absolutely. We grow our multi-stem trees both in pots and in open ground. The advantage of a potted multi-stem is that it is immediately available. Come and select your unique specimen yourself. Our garden experts are happy to assist you with their expertise.
